Lab expands to ID missing U.S. troops faster
By Associated Press
HONOLULU (AP) _ The U.S. military is expanding its laboratory dedicated to analyzing remains of American war dead, which should speed up the identification process.
By October, the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command will be expanded about 65 tables from 22 tables when the lab at Hickam Air Force Base is renovated and a second lab is opened at neighboring Pearl Harbor.
The changes should also increase the number of identifications made. JPAC currently identifies about 70 individuals a year and has help repatriate more than 1,400 troops overall.
JPAC uses dental comparisons, DNA, X-rays, prescription eyeglass examination, wedding rings and watches to make an identification.
